The White Album

With my new grown-up job, where everyone wears grown-up, professional clothes, I sometimes feel like I am swimming in a sea of white collared shirts.

I, myself, have never quite mastered the white collared shirt. For one, I think they are boring. And for two, I can never make them look quite right. (Which I blame on them being boring.)

But today I came across this picture of Brana Wolf, Editor-at-Large at Harper's Bazaar, and Nina Garcia, fashion director of Marie Claire, both wearing white collared shirts and I thought to myself, "If it's hip enough for them, I must be able to make it work for me."

The subtle details on Brana's shirt-- the ruffle at the bottom hem and the high, triangle-topped pocket on the left breast-- take it past basic, and allow the shirt to stand on it's own.

And I love how Nina has taken a more casual approach to the usually stuffy white button-up, with the sleeves rolled up and the top buttons undone. Oo-la-la! I also like how she has paired the formal item with hip cargo pants.

I am also seeing white collared shirts under trendy flyaway cardigans and cozy wraps and feeling pretty good about that. With the weather turning colder, a white button-up can layer under all kinds of things, taking the place of neutral tanks and camis that might not make the cut for winter. Pair a white collared shirt with a comfy tie-waist sweater and a pair of distressed jeans and I'd say you've got it made. And you'll be right on trend.

What say ye?
Any favorite tips for rocking the white collar?

The key for me, especially in colder months, is layering.

I think it's great to throw a white collared shirt under something unexpected like this J.Crew corsage tee.

Fun post!

Just stumbled upon your website, then your blog...your dresses are gorgeous - I have never seen any like them.

With a white collared shirt, perhaps throw on a scarf, like the Fiora scarf from Anthropologie.

Great post- I always love reading your fashion posts. Anyway, I used to have the same problem with white shirts. However, a few years ago I found a white shirt at H&M that had small belt loops & came with a thick black ribbon belt. It has been the only white shirt that has ever been able to work for me & I can imagine an ambitious, crafty type could easily make one out of any white shirt.

I adore your dresses as well as your blog - and as much as anything, your mission! Thank you!
My number one tip for rocking a white button up: it's a classic! SO, let it be classic - pop the collar, snap up a simple pearl necklace, and streamline everything else. A very clean, well-fitting white button-up is the ultimate statement that you are SIMPLY FABULOUS!

Oh, I connected with this post :) I never used to "get" collared shirts, but they are growing on me. I like wearing a big chunky necklace, or a vintage scarf. I also have to wear some kind of funky shoes--cowboy boots, or some vintage pumps. Also, the thing that gets about the collared shirts are the ironing. I loathe ironing. I'm lucky that my husband loves it!

two things: 1) after many (years) of searching for the perfect collared shirt, i finally came to the understanding that nice white shirts were expensive. Yes, pay up that $50+ to get one that is fitted properly to your shape. (should be skinny in the middle-ish and flare a little at the bottom.) It's worth it.

2) I've had several people mention that white tends to "pop" better for people with dark hair and fair complexions. It's the whole high contrast thing. I have black hair and am quite fair, so a clean white shirt is a popular staple in my closet.

(PS - i totally agree w/the rolling up of the sleeves and leaving the top button undone. Dunno why it works but it does!)

Per Cardigan Empire's most recent post I've become a follower of your on FB as an additional way to enter her drawing for one of your dresses but I never saw a hidden promotional code. Did I do it right? Love your dresses!

I haven't found one yet that stays wrinkle free, so I usually keep them as undershirts when I want a white collar to pop out over a sweater. But, I love the look.

I love a crisp white collarded shirt with an interesting cardigan or a classic high-waisted pencil skirt.

I wear my white collared shirts with a tank top over it sometimes (striped or plain solid colors). I love the way it looks like a vest buttoned up. I also like ruffles with my white collared shirts or wearing it with a nice necklace or a bracelet when the sleeves are rolled up :)
